The Unseen Face of Performance: Demographic Interactions of Effective Decision-Making and Mental Well-being in Folk-Player Athletes

Abstract


This study examined the relationship between effective decision-making and mental well-being in folk dance athletes and investigated the main and interaction effects of these variables according to age, sex, and marital status. Given that folk dance performance requires synchronization, rhythm, coordination, and continuous adaptation within a group setting, effective decision-making and mental well-being are considered critical psychological factors that may influence performance quality and adaptation. A total of 496 athletes actively participating in folk dance across various regions of Türkiye were voluntarily included in the study, which was conducted within a cross-sectional correlational design. Data were collected via the Internal Decision-Making subscale of the Scale of Effective Decision-Making in Sport and the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale Short Form; Pearson correlation analysis and two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were performed. There was a positive and statistically significant relationship between effective decision-making and mental well-being levels of folk-dance athletes (r = .51, p < .01). Effective decision-making levels differed significantly as a function of the sex × age interaction (F (2,490) = 5.10, p < .01, η² = .020), and mental well-being levels varied significantly according to the age × marital status interaction (F (2,490) = 3.95, p < .05, η² = .016). Cognitive decision-making processes and psychological well-being should be evaluated jointly in the context of folk-dance performance, and that decision-making and mental well-being in folk dance athletes require multidimensional examination within the framework of developmental and contextual variables.
